ClaroRead is a highly effective, multi-sensory software solution for supporting reading and writing. Designed with maximum simplicity and flexibility for all ages and abilities, ClaroRead aids concentration and increases confidence.
ClaroRead can speak practically any on-screen text out loud, and is perfectly integrated with Microsoft Word. With ClaroRead Plus and Pro, scanned books and documents are also read back with complete clarity.
A wide range of visual tools are included to color, highlight, and focus on text as it is spoken by the computer. ClaroRead improves written accuracy with an enhanced spell check, homophone check, thesaurus, and speaking dictionary. Words can also be spoken back as they are typed.
ClaroRead is easily customized to suit individual needs – making it the ideal companion for learning and working.

ClaroRead for PC V6 Key Features
- Text to Speech helps users who have difficulty reading and writing by speaking text aloud for verbal confirmation – an ideal solution to verify that what is written is correct. ClaroRead comes with high quality, human sounded speech synthesizers. These allow for accurate reading of text on screen in an easy to listen to and clearly spoken voice.
- Microsoft Word integration allowing users to carry on using their preferred document writing software package but being able to have additional functions through ClaroRead.
- Font & Spacing helps to arrange and color the user’s Word document in a way that makes the text easy to read.
- Word Prediction helps users with typing by providing a list of possible words the user is trying to type. Such a feature reduces the probability of misspelling or writing an incorrect word.
- Focus Sentence feature grays or dims out sentences in Microsoft Word not being spoken by the ClaroRead voice. Helpful for focusing the eye on the text, and also tracking the position in a document.
- Scan Paper & PDF enables users to scan documents into accessible formats to be read back by ClaroRead.
- Homophone Support highlights these tricky words which sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings, such as ’there’ and ’their’.

- Word and phrase translation for bilingual versions. ClaroRead will display a translation for a selected word, from its installed database. Select multiple words and ClaroRead will use an online translation service to translate the phrase. International Versions only.
- Background color highlighting in Internet Explorer, as in Microsoft Word.
- Speak on select now works when selecting with double and triple-clicks.
- Selecting ‘Ignore all’ during a homophone check now causes the homophone to always be ignored.
- ‘More results’ button in the prediction window allows multiple pages of results to be retrieved when predicting.

Improved ClaroRead Features
- Prediction has phonetic and match anywhere prediction modes as well as the traditional completion mode.
- Entries in the prediction window can be given a custom font allowing the user to change the size and style of the text to make it more readable.

Text-To-Speech
ClaroRead speaks back text as it is typed, allowing a user to check and proofread work quickly and easily. Text can be spoken at any point by highlighting individual sections of text and pressing the Play button – great for proofreading.
- Close integration with Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, and Adobe Reader means at any point in a document, web page, or PDF can be clicked and played.
- Pronunciation Dictionary enables the way words are pronounced to be modified if required.

Integration With Microsoft Word, Open Office, And Internet Explorer
ClaroRead provides a single toolbar for use in Microsoft Word, Open Office, and Internet Explorer that combines a homophone and dictionary checker, font and spacing commands, a thesaurus, spell checker, and a save to audio function. All have clear graphic icons for ease of recognition.
Open Office 2.4 And 3.0
- Supports speech in Open Office.
- Highlighting by word, word trail, sentence, or paragraph and background color while highlighting.
- Not supported are focus sentence, homophone, and spell checker.

Font And Color
When working with Microsoft Word, ClaroRead’s Font button can be used to easily modify the font size, type, and color of the whole document. Also included is the Tiresias family of fonts which have been designed for optimum accessibility and usability. Tiresias PC font is installed by ClaroRead for use in all the Windows applications.

Visual Highlighting
Visual highlighting works in Microsoft Word, Open Office, PDF, and Internet Explorer. The Word Trail feature makes words color progressively as they are spoken by ClaroRead.
- Any color can be chosen to highlight the text.
- Effective word by word highlighting with minimal visual disruption.
Microsoft Word
- Focus Sentence feature grays or dims out sentences not being spoken by the ClaroRead voice.
Spacing
Text character, line, and paragraph spacing using Microsoft Word requires some detailed knowledge. ClaroRead makes it simple to space out text in Microsoft Word.
- Expand spacing.
- Change line spacing.
- Changes the number of points (spaces) after the end of each paragraph.
Homophones
Homophones are words that are pronounced the same even if they differ in spelling or meaning, such as ‘pair’ and ‘pear’.
- Mark in color all the homophones and confusable words in a document. Using the Advanced Settings Editor, additional tricky and confusable words can be added.
- The Check feature will list alternative words that sound the same, along with the meaning of each word.
- Mark homophones in color as words are typed.
- ClaroRead includes over two thousand pictures, helping users to select the correct homophone or choice of wording.
Spell Check
Spell check any text in any application, whether a web page, word document, or PDF. ClaroRead provides a single Check button that combines a homophone dictionary, thesaurus, reference dictionary, and spell checker, making the checking of the text and documents easier and more comprehensive.
If a word is a homophone the Homophone Check box will appear, along with the definition. If the word has alternative words with the same or similar meaning, the Meaning Check box will appear. To see the dictionary definition and context box, click on the View More button. It is possible to Spell Check individual words or the whole of the document at any time.
The Check boxes are fully speech enabled, so hovering the mouse over the words will make them speak. We also have over 2000 picture icons to help with word definitions.
Word Check
Word Check includes extra definitions, context for the current spelling, and a Google search link within the improved Word Check window. Any corrections made in the ClaroRead Spell Check window are remembered, and spelling corrections can be reviewed later. This information can be used to build a personal correction list and add more corrections directly to Word’s Autocorrect in bulk from the ClaroRead Advanced Settings Editor.
Definition Tooltip
The Speaking Dictionary feature in ClaroRead enables users to get a definition tooltip simply by holding down the control key and hovering the mouse cursor over the chosen word. The definitions tooltip will show English dictionary definitions as well as a Google lookup button further information is required.
Scan and Convert Files
With ClaroRead Plus and Pro the powerful Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology means that any paper document or PDF file becomes accessible. Through Omnipage 17, textbooks, photocopies and handouts are easily converted into Microsoft Word documents or accessible PDF files. The text can be spoken out loud by ClaroRead or edited. PDF files can also be unlocked and edited.
Scanning with ClaroRead Pro
- ‘Scan from screen’ options to perform OCR on on-screen images.
- Omnipage 17 is the highest quality Optical Character Recognition software. Ideal for scanning or converting books, articles and other content to become accessible, readable and editable.
- Faster accurate scanning.
- Add, delete and re-order scanned areas, alter page orientation and other settings.
- Outputted documents can be saved in a variety of formats, including an accessible PDF.
Word Prediction And Training
ClaroRead contains a Word Prediction feature, which can be useful for certain computers users. ClaroRead uses a base prediction consisting of the most frequently used words in the English language. The dictionary learns as words are typed and rejects words that do not pass the automatic spell check.
- Word Prediction list automatically appears by cursor during typing.
- Prediction Window can be docked anywhere on the screen to use as a reference.
- Creation of multiple Prediction Dictionaries. Ideal for creating subject and curriculum specific dictionaries.
- Ability to rename and delete prediction dictionaries.
- Export word lists and turn off spell check when adding words.
- Learning words as you type and adding to the prediction dictionary
Change the style of the prediction list by selecting one of the four styles.
- Completion – Will offer suggestions based on the letters that have been entered. For example, typing ‘p’ will bring up ‘page’ and ‘place’.
- Phonetic – Will offer suggestions on what has been typed phonetically. For example typing ‘ka’ will bring up ‘company’ and ‘country’.
- First & Contains – Will suggest words using the first letter entered as the first letter of the word. Each letter entered after that will be contained somewhere in the word in the correct order. For example, typing ‘st’ will bring up ‘site’ and ‘September’.
- Contains Anywhere – Will suggest words where the letters are found anywhere at all in the word. For example, typing ‘gt’ will bring up ‘against’ and ‘containing’.
Save To Audio, Video, Or iTunes
It is now possible to convert any text into a video with a high quality ’voice over’ synchronized with the text. The text color can be edited and the video can be produced to suit a wide range of popular mobile devices with video screens – iPhone, iPod Touch and Nano, Nokia, Walkman phones, and of course Media Player software. It is quick and easy to do, allowing users to take their documents and web pages with them on the move.
Send To iTunes Function
- Send selected text as audio files to iTunes.
- Files can be named, indexed.
- Audio files can be uploaded to iPod or iPhone.
